A Private label used by a sounding recording service/studio provided by Percy Phillips , from his battery/record shop in Kensington Liverpool between 1955 and 1969. The original equipment was a Master Sound Systems portable recording and disc cutting studio. The cost of a recording session was set at 11/3 for a direct cut to disc or 17/6 if a pre-recording to tape was required. In 1960 the studio transferred to 45 rpm 7" and 8" acetates from the earlier 78 rpm 10" blank plates. The Kensington label design regularly changed and was applied to the discs. All records, other than special editions, came in a white, green or brown sleeve with the 'Phillips Sound Recording Services' stamped on the front. Despite other famous patrons including artists and comedians such as Billy Furry and Ken Dodd, the studio became famous in 1981 when a 78 rpm 10" acetate of a small local skiffle group The Quarrymen, was put up for sale. The disc the first known recording of three lads who would go on to become The Beatles was to become the most expensive record in the world. |
