Liner Notes:

Shea Stadium 23 August 1966

A little over a year after their first triumphant appearance at New York's Shea Stadium, The Beatles returned for a second time at this momentous venue.

The concert did not sell out, with 11,000 of the 55,600 tickets still available. Nonetheless, The Beatles made more money from their appearance than they had in 1965, receiving $189,000 - 65 per cent of the gross takings of $292,000.

Sporting white pinstriped suits, the Beatles played well, performing eleven songs from their usual setlist (five captured here on disc one) Straight after the concert The Beatles flew to Los Angeles. They arrived the following morning in the early hours and enjoyed a rest day before flying on to Seattle.

Candlestick Park August 29 1966

As The Beatles made their way to Candlestick Park, Paul McCartney asked their press officer Tony Barrow to make a recording of the concert on audio cassette, using a hand-held recorder. The cassette lasted 30 minutes on each side, and, as Barrow didn't flip it during the show, the recording cut off during final song Long Tall Sally.

Barrow gave the original tape of the Candlestick Park concert to McCartney. He also made a single copy, which was kept in a locked drawer in Barrow's office desk. The recording has since become widely circulated on bootlegs, although quite how is not known. Lee Gray (aka Lee Darling) was an American disc jockey who worked hard to be seen as a Beatles insider. This drive time DJ and manager at WTRY-AM in Troy, New York (reaching Albany & Schenectady, too), was best known for taking TRY's contest winning listeners on trips to see the band perform and sometimes meet The Beatles. In 1964 he took busloads of kids to Carnegie Hall, Atlantic City, and Cincinnati. In '65 Gray escorted 200 more contest winners to Shea Stadium. Late that year he and his wife accompanied two lucky winners to New York City, Paris, and London (twice) to meet the Fabs and to enjoy their Christmas show. His interviews from that trip aren't available. WTRY station promos from that era are. In 1966, Gray took one lucky contest winner to meet the band backstage before their final concert in San Francisco. Some of Gray's tape from the locker room at Candlestick Park is presented on disc one.
