Probably the most notorious bootleg of all time, well maybe not, but it definitely led to an unprecedented attack by Paul/MPL and the Press against the bootlegger. Paul was reported to be very upset; not only by the release of this title but also that the last works he spoke to Linda on her death bed being printed along side a photograph of Linda on the inside cover.
It was these final words that clearly led to the title.
"You're up on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion; it's a fine
spring day, we're riding through the woods. The bluebells are all out, and the
sky is clear blue."
(Paul McCartney, April 17, 1998)
The British press went as far as to name and shame the people behind the Yellow Dog/Cat label and incorrectly naming an unrelated fan based label Black Cat as being an associated label.
Geoff Baker of MPL was quoted in the Sunday Mirror 25 Oct 1998 , almost four month after Appaloosa Love's release.
"I hope whoever is behind this doesn't ever run into me on a dark night.
Doing this is definitely a bad health move for them. There is a huge difference between taping a band at a concert for your own pleasure and this type of commercial bootlegging in which people get ripped off.
"I hope the scum behind this rip-off get their just deserts.
"Anyone who cares about Linda wouldn't have anything to do with this money-grabbing sham.
"I think it's despicable to use such tender words delivered by Paul at a time of appalling heartbreak as a con to boost sales of this rip off.
"They trade as Yellow Cat Records
- yellow being the important word - because these people are terrible cowards
trading on other people's tragedies."
The Authorities under took to investigate in full , I am sure that the majority of collectors did not and do not see this release as either a rip of or an insult to Linda but more a tribute . I recall at the time of the press uproar that some collectors believed that it was Paul's publishers that were the people pulling a "con to boost sales" with the press releases being made just days before the posthumous release of Linda's Wide Prairie album.
Clearly neither the Bootleg title , use of some of the last images of Linda taken by her daughter Mary and Paul's last words to her were tasteless and probably left a bad taste for some. Whether it would have been better received with alternate artwork we will never know, but I believe that the release was intended to be a tribute to Linda rather than just a rip off. After all there were non of those hideous isolated vocals that had circulated years before which had previously upset Paul so.
The disc includes a good collection of Linda's work from harder to find commercial releases to extracts from Paul's Oobu Joobu Radio show and of course the Appaloosa movements and Jam , which appeared for the first time giving this disc Core Status.
Probably spurred by the demand after the press frenzy a FAKE appeared without the Yellow Cat disc art being replaced by an Appaloosa Horse , with a minor change to the mastering and has similar audio quality.
