The Beatles, with Pete Best on drums, were auditioned at the Broadcasting House, Manchester on 12 Feb. 1962 and despite some reservations about Paul, they were offered a contract to appear on the BBC Light programme. Brian signed and returned the contract drawn up on the 20 Feb. agreeing to a fee of £26 18s 0d plus the cost of four return rail tickets at £0 8s 6d each .

Just two days after the contract was drawn up the imminent broadcast was announced on the front page of the fortnightly Liverpool music paper Mersey Beat - Vol1 #16 - Feb. 22. With the BBC's listings magazine Radio Times printing details of their performance before the show was even recorded.

Rehearsal

The Beatles rehearsed from 3:45 unfortunately this was not recorded. Despite being a radio show the boys then changed into their new suits for the first time. To be fair it was being recorded by the BBC in front of a teenage audience.

Recording The Show

They performed : Till There Was You, Like Dreamers Do, Memphis Tennessee and Hello Little Girl. Pete Best was on drums on this show.

Broadcast Show

Whilst the complete show does not circulate, we do have the three The Beatles elements, including introductions. It is for this reason that it is unclear what order the songs were broadcast. The announcer clearly says 'This time, John Lennon takes the vocal lead' before Memphis Tennessee, but that only suggest that it was not recorded first. I am however happy to stand by Kevin Howlett's guide and retain Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream?) as having been broadcast first.
