Recording History / Dick James Disc

NOTES

There appear to be two Dick James acetates of Like Dreamers Do and reporting errors has lead to confusion

This page is currently a composite of all info and I will try and unpick :

a) if there are two discs , probably yes and if so

b)which sales match each disc.

Version A Unknown mix if any, of a track from the famous Decca Sessions.

Version B a demo cut in 1963 or 1964 for the purpose of promoting Lennon/McCartney songs for other artists to possibly record.

This song was recorded by the Applejacks in 1964 , so this may give an indication of the Cutting date

I have no evidence to support the matter either way but would remind collectors of the wise statement Caveat emptor when dealing with acetates. They were a standard recording media of the period and blank discs were sold by the tin full. Just because it is an EMI acetate does not guarantee that it was cut by or for EMI or the Beatles or that it contains any rare or new Beatles material.

The Beatles :- Like Dreamers Do

Original c 1962 UK One Sided 10" shellac coated 78rpm Acetate

A remarkable and significant Beatle artefact

It is well documented that The Beatles played this song at the Decca Auditions January 1st 1962 , and that recording has been widely available over the years on bootleg and official releases ........

Listening to this disc it  is clearly a different 'take'  from the Decca Audition version  ..... wether this was a 'warm-up' for the session , or maybe a later recording I am not sure , as when I purchased the disc , the previous owner (not in the music business) had no idea how important the disc  was or is , and had no information to pass on to me - one of those times when someone has had a disc for so many years they can't remember where it came from ........

The Disc has  clear signs of ageing , with  some lustre and several light to moderate marks evident ..... the label has some fading , but the wording is legible .... The 'b' side (blank ) of the disc has no label , just the pre-printed EMI information ....... The disc plays through quite well , with clear sound and some surface noise , which is not unusual  with acetates .... there are no loud pops or clicks : The Disc is graded at  better than GOOD  condition.

The disc comes in a white card 10" sleeve
The running time of the recording is 2 minutes 29 seconds
