This disc first came to the public's attention in 1995 and it had always been assumes that the circulating One and One is Two track had come from the Dick James acetate, this is still probable but not guaranteed. It is unclear when or why this disc was cut and clearly with two Demo cuts it was always going to be a very desirable disc for collectors and 'Apple'. Despite being sold with a cassette of the contents , What Goes On has not appeared for collectors and on the auction description appears to be an alternate version to that discussed by Neil Aspinal in his column in the Beatles Book #33 in April 1966 , where he talks of a Paul multitracked demo recorded for Ringo. In December 2012 a Dick James acetate from a George Harrison family member was auctioned which may or may not contain the same vocal guitar demo. |

1995 - Auction Info 778An Acetate Recording Of 'What Goes On'/'One and One Is Two' By The Beatles, probably 1964, a double-sided, 7inch Emidsic, labels with details in ballpoint, some deletions, with cassette recording This version of 'What Goes On' is unreleased and differs from that on 'Rubber Soul' and would appear to be a demo by John and Paul with acoustic guitar accompaniment only. 'One And One Is Two' was written by Paul in January 1964, apparently intending it for Billy J. Kramer. Neither Kramer or The Beatles released the song but it was recorded in May 1964 by an obscure South African group, The Strangers. It was not a success, however. Although the sound quality is not good, these recordings are both of considerable interest. |
