NOTES

The earliest details I can locate of this disc are those provide with the 2005 auction which provided no provenance. The is no mention in guides of a disc being cut on the 2nd October 1967, but that is not unusual.

The auction description is interesting, but does not seem to fit with what we know of the recording sessions. Neither seller offered sound samples and without listening it is difficult to identify. However at 4:35 and with the Mike Sames Singers singing their overdubs including 'ho ho ho' it most be a post 29th September take/mix.

My best guess for now would be that this is a cut of of Take 17 RM23 aka the US Single.

If you have more information please drop me a line.

2012 - Auction Info

I Know about the Beatles!!! My uncle was a huge fan of the Beatles and this was probably his most prized posession. It was the only one he ever talked about to me anyway! This song featured on their Magical Mystery Tour LP. The playing surface is not the best and there are markings on it, though they don't look deep. It looks like there are some tiny chips round the very edge too, though these are on the very edge and not on the playing surface or on the grooves themselves. I have tried to show this in the photo. Also written on the label is '4:35', '45', 'RLP' and '2-10-67'. The other side is completely blank with no grooves.

2005 - Auction Info

A rare Beatles 7 inch Emidisc single sided white label Demo/Acetate for the classic song ‘I am the Walrus’ from the 1967 EP ‘Magical Mystery Tour’.

This is a really interesting demo disc with different orchestration, more strings, talking and laughing. Quite something to listen to!

The label is variously annotated in biro by hand with the song title, ‘I am the Walrus’, ‘4.35’ (for the time), ‘45’ (for the speed), ‘2-10-27’, ‘RLP’ and ‘THE BEATLES’.

Emidisc printing reads:

‘MADE IN GT. BRITAIN EMIDISC RECORDING BLANK’

‘KEEP SURFACE CLEAN – USE LIGHTWEIGHT PICK UP’

 ‘E.M.I. TAPE LIMITED – HAYES – MIDDLESEX – ENGLAND

’I have played this disc once and it played without jumping. Condition is heavily marked with multiple edge chipping showing the metal core, the surface scratches are numerous, with scuffs and some deeper scratching which are apparent when it is played. There is a lot of overall crackle and hiss due to the condition. There is also some degradation of the acetate surface on the lead-out groove. Label is a little grubby and the reverse blank side is overall surface scratched and worn.

In my opinion you’ll want to record it once and then make sure it’s preserved! It’s really quite amazing to hear this version.

The acetate is in a card sleeve with two red borders and polythene liner.
